Police launched a sudden and well-coordinated raid in the Upparu area under the Kinniya Police Division in the Trincomalee District, resulting in the arrest of several individuals engaged in illegal sand mining activities. Acting on credible and confidential intelligence received by law enforcement, the operation was carried out on May 25, 2026, as part of intensified efforts to curb environmental violations and unauthorized resource extraction in the region.
Vehicles used in the illegal operation.
Police surrounded and seized three tractors and four tipper trucks that were operating without valid permits during the illegal activity. Officers also arrested the drivers who were operating these vehicles at the scene.
The operation was carried out by Criminal Investigation Division officers as part of an intensified effort to control and prevent illegal sand mining in the area. Initial investigations into the arrested suspects are currently underway.
Police Seize 70 Bags of Sea Shells.
On the same day, during another search operation in the Soorangal area of Kinniya, police intercepted a tractor transporting illegally smuggled sea shells. Officers seized the vehicle after discovering 70 sacks of sea shells, each weighing around 50 kilograms, inside the tractor.
Further investigations are currently underway regarding the seized sea shells and the arrested driver. Authorities are continuing inquiries to determine the full extent of the illegal smuggling network involved in the incident.
Arrested suspects to be produced before court proceedings.
Legal action has been intensified in connection with the incident, as the suspects are believed to have violated environmental laws and exploited natural resources.
Police are currently making arrangements to produce the arrested individuals along with the seized vehicles before the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court for further legal proceedings.
