A two-year-and-two-month-old girl died following a severe road accident in the Mayilapitiya area of Talatuoya, Kandy District, police confirmed. The accident occurred yesterday afternoon (03) along the Thennakumbura–Ragala main road.
Police reports state that a luxury car traveling toward Thennakumbura attempted to overtake a vehicle ahead. During the overtaking maneuver, the car entered the opposite lane and collided head-on with a three-wheeler coming from the other direction. The impact caused serious injuries to all passengers in the three-wheeler, including a young family traveling together.
The girl died despite intensive care treatment.

At the time of the crash, the child sat in the rear seat of the three-wheeler with her parents. Emergency responders rushed all three injured family members to Hanguranketha Hospital immediately after the incident. Medical staff admitted them for urgent treatment due to the severity of their injuries.
Doctors transferred the critically injured child to the Intensive Care Unit, but she later died despite continued medical efforts. Authorities identified the deceased child as a resident of the Unuwinna area. The tragedy has deeply affected the local community.
Police Arrest Driver and Launch Investigation.

Police arrested the driver of the luxury car shortly after the accident. Talatuoya Police launched a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision. Officers inspected the crash site and recorded initial statements from witnesses and involved parties.
Meanwhile, the mother and father of the child remain hospitalized and continue to receive treatment for their injuries. Investigators continue to examine whether reckless overtaking or lane discipline failure caused the crash. Authorities also review road safety conditions along the busy Thennakumbura–Ragala route as part of the ongoing inquiry.
