Police in Kandy arrested a Buddhist monk and a woman over allegations of sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl. Investigators identified the monk as the victim’s uncle from her father’s side. The incident has sparked fresh concern over child protection and misconduct involving religious figures in Sri Lanka.
Authorities revealed that the 25-year-old monk served at a temple in the Bhairawakanda area. Police also arrested a 29-year-old woman from the same locality for allegedly assisting in the crime. Officers produced both suspects before the Kandy Magistrate’s Court after the arrest on May 20.
Court Orders and Ongoing Investigation.
The Kandy Magistrate ordered the monk to remain in remand custody until today while the investigation continues. Meanwhile, the court granted bail to the female suspect on two sureties worth Rs. 200,000 each.
Kandy Police continue to investigate the incident and gather further evidence related to the allegations. Authorities have not yet released additional details about the victim in order to protect her identity.
Public Concern Grows Over Similar Incidents.
The latest arrest has intensified public concern because another case involving a Buddhist monk recently created controversy in Anuradhapura. In that case, authorities accused a monk of sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl while serving in a key religious position.
That investigation still continues in court. The new allegations in Kandy have once again raised questions about accountability, child safety, and public trust in religious institutions across the country.
