United National Party (UNP) member Ajith Manapperuma urged the government to follow proper legal procedures in the case involving former State Intelligence Service Chief Suresh Sale. He stated that he has no objection to arresting or questioning Sale or producing him before court. However, he stressed that authorities must carry out the investigation without any motive of political revenge and must ensure full fairness in the process.
No Objection to Legal Action, Says UNP MP.
Manapperuma explained that he fully supports lawful action if authorities follow due process. He added that even if a court delivers a severe verdict, including a death sentence, he would not oppose it as long as the judiciary reaches the decision through proper legal channels. He emphasized that justice must come through the court system and not through politically driven actions.
Government Must Respect Law and Human Rights.
Manapperuma further highlighted that Sri Lanka already has clear legal provisions on how to treat suspects during investigations. He insisted that no authority should ignore or override those rules. He warned that any violation of legal procedures or human rights could damage public trust in the justice system.
He called on the government to avoid arbitrary or authoritarian actions and to ensure strict compliance with the law. He concluded that authorities must handle the Suresh Sale case transparently, fairly, and within the boundaries of the legal framework to uphold justice and public confidence.
