France Remembers Mullivaikkal Victims as Calls for Justice Continue

Thousands of Tamils and human rights supporters gathered in France to commemorate the victims of the final phase of Sri Lanka’s civil war during the annual Mullivaikkal Remembrance event.

The Sri Lankan civil war, which lasted for more than 25 years, officially ended on May 18, 2009. During the final stages of the conflict, thousands of Tamil civilians lost their lives, with many reports alleging large-scale civilian casualties in a short period of time.

Remembering the Victims of the Final War

Mullivaikkal Remembrance events are held annually by Tamil communities and human rights organizations across the world to honor those who were killed during the war. These commemorations also serve as a platform to call for truth, justice, and accountability for the victims and their families.

Sixteen years after the end of the conflict, many Tamils continue to seek answers and justice for the lives lost during the final stages of the war.

Tribute Ceremony and Awareness March in Paris

The 17th anniversary remembrance of the Tamil genocide was observed in France with a large awareness march and memorial gathering.

The procession began at Place de la République in Paris and concluded at Place de la Bastille. Following the march, a remembrance ceremony was held near the Mullivaikkal memorial monument at Place de la Bastille.

A memorial flame was lit by a family member who lost relatives in Mullivaikkal, symbolizing the sacrifices and suffering endured during the conflict. Participants paid floral tributes and observed moments of remembrance in honor of those who lost their lives.

The event highlighted the continued determination of the Tamil community to preserve the memory of the victims and to pursue justice for those affected by the war.
