CID arrests police officer linked to Colombo kidnapping and gold robbery case.

A Sub-Inspector attached to the Sri Lanka Police has been arrested and remanded over a kidnapping and gold robbery incident reported in Colombo. Authorities stated that the suspect previously served at the Vellaveli Police Station before the arrest.

Investigators revealed that the incident took place on March 18, 2023, while the police officer worked at the Colombo North Crimes Division. According to the complaint, a group abducted an individual and robbed nearly two kilograms of gold during the operation. Police later transferred the officer to the Vellaveli Police Station while detectives continued investigations into the case.

CID Arrests Suspect During Police Training Programme

At the time of the arrest, the suspect attended a police training programme in Kelaniya. Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department carried out the arrest on Wednesday while he participated in the training sessions.

Authorities produced the suspect before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, May 21. The magistrate ordered officials to remand him until the 1st of next month as investigations continue into the alleged kidnapping and robbery.

Court’s Next Legal Action

Following the arrest and court proceedings, the Sri Lanka Police suspended the police officer from duty over the serious allegations linked to the incident. Authorities launched further disciplinary action while investigators continued extensive inquiries into the kidnapping and gold robbery case.

Officials are currently examining the background of the incident, the whereabouts of the stolen gold, and the possible involvement of several other individuals connected to the organised operation. Investigators also continue to record statements and collect additional evidence to uncover the full details surrounding the robbery and abduction carried out in Colombo.
