Following the death inquiry into the murder of Jaffna University Faculty of Siddha Medicine senior lecturer Dayanithi Thileepan, police launched further investigations that led to several legal actions and developments in the case. Police told the court that the Judicial Medical Officer determined Jaffna University academic Dayalini Thileepan died due to strangulation. The information surfaced during the magisterial inquiry conducted yesterday (20) at the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court under the supervision of Magistrate S. Lenin Kumar.
Court Confirms Strangulation in Death of Jaffna University Academic

During the inquiry, the lecturer’s son and several police officers gave testimony before the court. Investigators informed the magistrate that the medical examination confirmed strangulation caused the lecturer’s death. Police further stated that they suspect the two individuals currently under remand custody in relation to the incident. The case attracted significant attention as legal representatives from multiple parties appeared before the court during the proceedings.
Lawyers Represent Multiple Parties in Court Proceedings

A number of senior attorneys appeared before the court on behalf of both the affected family and the suspects connected to the case. President’s Counsel M.A. Sumanthiran instructed Attorney-at-Law Benislaus Dushan to represent the affected side during the inquiry.
Attorney-at-Law Sharmini Vigneshwaran appeared for the first suspect, identified as the lecturer’s son-in-law. Another attorney represented the daughter of a senior lecturer, whom investigators identified as the second suspect in the case. That legal representation took place under the direction of Attorney-at-Law Samantha Athukorala.

Investigators and legal representatives continued to present submissions as authorities expanded inquiries into the lecturer’s death. The incident has raised serious concern within the academic community in Jaffna, while police continue investigations to determine the complete circumstances surrounding the killing.
