An official linked to the Hindu–Buddhist coordination group, Dr. Chidambara Megan, raised allegations during the 407th remembrance event of King Sankili held in Jaffna on Saturday. He claimed that the Cultural Affairs Minister supported the installation of a Nataraja statue at the Jaffna International Airport, while Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekaran opposed the move, arguing that it could create religious tensions.
According to Dr. Megan, a donor based in London sent the Nataraja statue for display at the airport. He said he collaborated with a professor from University of Jaffna and temple representatives to facilitate the installation process.
Statue Reportedly Withheld from Airport Installation.
Dr. Megan alleged that authorities prevented the statue from being installed despite initial support for the proposal. He claimed that concerns over possible communal tensions influenced the decision.
He further stated that officials transferred the statue to the premises of Naga Vihara Temple rather than placing it at the airport. According to his remarks, the statue remains there while the dispute continues.
Call for Transparency and Immediate Action.
Dr. Megan urged the relevant authorities to provide a clear explanation regarding the status and location of the statue. He argued that the prolonged delay affects efforts to showcase the region’s cultural heritage at Jaffna International Airport.
He also called on government decision-makers to resolve differences surrounding the issue and ensure transparency in the process. Furthermore, he encouraged cultural officials, university representatives, and religious leaders to work together to avoid misunderstandings and maintain harmony among communities.
Dr. Megan concluded by requesting an immediate review of the decision-making process and appropriate action regarding the proposed installation of the Nataraja statue at the airport.
