The Colombo High Court is scheduled to deliver its judgment today (09) in four corruption cases filed against former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has filed these cases, accusing him of causing financial losses to the government.
National Lotteries Board Vehicle Procurement Case.
CIABOC alleges that Gunawardena caused financial losses to the government in 2006 while serving as Chairman of the National Lotteries Board. The charges claim that he arranged vehicles for the institution on a rental basis, leading to unnecessary state expenditure. Gunawardena has firmly denied all allegations brought against him.
High expectations in political circles.
The court initially scheduled the judgment for May 26, but Colombo High Court Judge Mohamed Mihal postponed the ruling, stating that the judgment was not ready. The court later rescheduled the delivery of the verdict to June 9.In the verdict delivered today, the Colombo High Court sentenced former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena to four years of rigorous imprisonment in one corruption case. The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 600,000.
