Manipay Police Accused of Traffic Violations

Public raises concerns over police officers allegedly violating road traffic rules in Manipay.

Police officers attached to the Sri Lanka Police station in Manipay have come under criticism for allegedly violating traffic regulations on Saturday (23).

A cricket match between Manipay Hindu College and Chavakachcheri Hindu College took place at the Manipay Hindu College grounds. Police officers from Manipay provided security during the event.

During the match, members of the public claimed that several police officers parked their vehicles near a pedestrian crossing in violation of road traffic regulations. Witnesses observed a three-wheeler used by ordinary police officers and motorcycles belonging to traffic police officers parked in the restricted area. Several other vehicles had also reportedly been parked in the same location.

Public Accuses Police Over Their Actions

People have accused the police, who are responsible for enforcing the law, of violating traffic regulations themselves. Residents also claimed that officers warned other motorists not to park in the area while continuing to keep their own vehicles parked there without removing them.

Members of the public stated that the road is narrow and frequently experiences heavy traffic congestion. As a result, both pedestrians and motorists reportedly faced difficulties due to the situation.

People have urged senior police officials, including the Northern Province Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, the Jaffna District Deputy Inspector General, the Senior Superintendent of Police, the Assistant Superintendent of Police, and the Officer-in-Charge of the Manipay Police Station, to conduct an immediate investigation into the incident.
