Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe recently held a special meeting with former Minister Wimal Weerawansa following the latter’s recent legal controversy linked to an incident near the War Heroes Memorial.
Wimal Weerawansa faced arrest over the incident and later secured bail. After the release, Ranil Wickremesinghe personally contacted him over the phone and expressed his support. During the conversation, Ranil also invited Weerawansa to visit him for a discussion at a convenient time.
Political Discussion Takes Place in Colombo.

Following the invitation, Wimal Weerawansa visited Ranil Wickremesinghe’s residence located on Fifth Lane in Kollupitiya, Colombo. The two politicians engaged in a lengthy political discussion that reportedly focused on the future direction of the opposition movement in Sri Lanka.
Sources revealed that Ranil Wickremesinghe stressed the importance of building a stronger joint opposition alliance. He also requested Wimal Weerawansa to play a major role in the proposed political effort.
Move to Strengthen a Joint Opposition.

Political sources further stated that several opposition parties, excluding the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, may soon unite under a broader joint opposition platform. Leaders expect the discussions to accelerate in the coming weeks as parties attempt to reorganize the opposition landscape.
The development has attracted significant public attention because Ranil Wickremesinghe and Wimal Weerawansa often stood on opposite sides of Sri Lankan politics for many years.
