London Tamils Demand Justice for War Victims

London Tamils renew calls for justice on May 18 remembrance day

Tamil communities in the United Kingdom marked May 18 Remembrance Day with a public gathering in London, commemorating those who died during the final stages of Sri Lanka’s civil war in Mullivaikkal in 2009. Protesters assembled near Parliament Square carrying banners and placards demanding justice, accountability, and international attention over wartime allegations.

The annual remembrance event, observed by sections of the Tamil diaspora worldwide, is held in memory of civilians who lost their lives during the closing phase of the armed conflict between Sri Lankan government forces and the LTTE.

Protesters Demand Truth Over Alleged Mass Graves

During the demonstration, participants displayed banners referring to the Chemmani mass graves, urging authorities to uncover the truth behind alleged burial sites and calling for independent investigations. Protest signs also appealed to the United Kingdom and the wider international community to support justice initiatives concerning Tamil victims.

Campaigners argued that unanswered questions surrounding wartime deaths, disappearances, and alleged human rights abuses continue to cause pain among affected families.

London Gathering Highlights Ongoing International Advocacy

Organisers described the event as both a remembrance and a call for accountability, with participants stressing that justice for victims remains an unresolved issue more than a decade after the war ended.

The gathering formed part of broader international remembrance events held annually by Tamil communities, reflecting continued advocacy on issues including accountability, truth-seeking, and recognition of wartime suffering in Sri Lanka.
