The Sri Lankan government has introduced a new policy to reduce plastic waste across the country. Authorities now prohibit the purchase and use of single-use plastic water bottles in all government institutions from today (31). The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government issued the circular under the signature of the ministry secretary.
Officials expect the decision to minimize environmental pollution and encourage sustainable practices within public institutions. The government also aims to create awareness about the harmful impact of plastic waste on the environment and public health.
Government Introduces New Circular.

The ministry released the circular to all state institutions and instructed heads of institutions to enforce the regulation immediately. The circular specifically targets plastic water bottles designed for one-time use by individuals. Authorities believe the move will significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste generated daily inside government offices.
However, the ministry secretary clarified that institutions can still purchase large-capacity plastic water containers when necessary. Officials plan to monitor the implementation process and encourage institutions to follow environmentally responsible practices.
Authorities Push for Eco-Friendly Practices.

The government continues to strengthen its environmental protection policies through several initiatives. This latest decision highlights the growing concern over plastic pollution in Sri Lanka. Environmental groups have welcomed the move and urged both public and private sectors to adopt similar measures.
Authorities also encourage employees and visitors to carry reusable water bottles instead of disposable plastic containers. The government expects the initiative to inspire wider public support for reducing plastic consumption nationwide.
