Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has accused the government of deliberately postponing Provincial Council elections due to concerns over its declining public support. He claimed that the results of the recent Local Government elections had created anxiety within the administration, prompting leaders to avoid another major electoral contest.
Premadasa made these remarks during a special meeting with former Provincial Council members held today at the Opposition Leader’s Office in Colombo.
Opposition Raises Concerns Over Democratic Representation.

Addressing the gathering, Premadasa stressed the importance of restoring Provincial Councils and ensuring that citizens receive proper regional representation. He stated that Provincial Councils play a crucial role in governance, development, and public participation. According to him, the continued absence of these institutions weakens democratic processes and deprives communities of an important platform for addressing local issues.
He also urged political parties and civil society groups to unite in defending democratic rights and demanding a clear timeline for the elections.
Campaign Against Election Delays Gains Momentum.

The meeting took place under the theme, “Let Us Defeat Anura’s Obsession with Postponing Provincial Councils.” During the discussion, participants expressed concern over the prolonged delay in holding the elections and called for immediate action to restore the Provincial Council system.
Premadasa reaffirmed his commitment to pushing for the elections and vowed to continue challenging any attempt to postpone them. He emphasized that the people deserve an opportunity to elect their representatives and participate fully in the democratic process.
