The Sri Lankan government has decided to cancel the controversial procurement process linked to the electronic passport (e-passport) project with immediate effect, according to Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Ajith P. Perera.
Speaking to the media, Ajith P. Perera said the Cabinet had instructed officials to stop the procurement process without delay. He stated that authorities took the decision following growing concerns and criticism surrounding the project.
Cabinet Orders Immediate Cancellation.
Ajith P. Perera revealed that the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration officially informed the relevant bidders about the decision on May 29 through an email communication. He noted that the government wanted to ensure transparency and accountability in all procurement-related activities connected to the e-passport initiative.
He also claimed that the Cabinet directly intervened in the matter after questions emerged regarding the procurement procedure
Concerns Continue Over E-Passport Project.
The e-passport project attracted significant public and political attention in recent months. Critics raised concerns about the procurement mechanism, financial transparency, and the selection process involving bidders.
Ajith P. Perera stressed that public institutions must follow proper procedures when handling large-scale national projects. He further emphasized the importance of protecting public funds and maintaining confidence in state procurement systems.
The government has not yet announced whether it will launch a fresh tender process for the e-passport project or introduce a revised framework for future implementation.
