Strong El Niño Threat Raises Drought Concerns Across Asia.

Strong El Nino conditions could trigger drought and climate challenges across Sri Lanka and Asia.

The United Nations weather agency has warned that one of the strongest El Niño conditions in a decade could develop in the coming months, creating serious climate challenges across several Asian countries, including Sri Lanka.

Climate experts expect the El Niño pattern to influence global weather systems from June onwards. They predict that the condition could continue until November, while its effects on Sri Lanka may last until February next year. Meteorologists say the changing weather pattern may reduce rainfall and increase temperatures across many regions.

Dry Weather Conditions Expected in Sri Lanka.

According to weather experts, Sri Lanka could experience unusually dry conditions during July and August due to the developing El Niño situation. The climate pattern may weaken normal rainfall activities and intensify heat across the island.

Scientists explain that strong wind currents moving from the east could redirect warm air waves toward Asia, increasing atmospheric temperatures. As a result, countries such as Sri Lanka, India, and Australia may face severe drought conditions and lower-than-normal rainfall during the second half of the year.

Food Supply and Fuel Prices May Face Pressure.

Experts also warn that the climate impact could affect agriculture and food distribution systems throughout Asia during the latter half of 2026. Farmers may struggle with reduced water availability, while crop production could decline in several regions.

In addition, authorities fear possible fertilizer shortages and rising fuel prices if extreme weather conditions continue for an extended period. Economic sectors that depend heavily on agriculture and transportation may face additional pressure as governments prepare for the potential climate crisis.
