A 22-year-old woman died after a brutal attack allegedly carried out by a young man living in her neighbourhood. The shocking incident took place on Monday evening in the Medirigiriya area of the Polonnaruwa District.
The victim worked as an employee at a private bank and lived with her family in Medirigiriya. According to initial investigations, a 28-year-old neighbour had pursued a romantic relationship with the young woman for a long period. However, she repeatedly rejected his proposal.
Suspect Attacks Woman After Repeated Rejection.
Police revealed that the suspect became deeply frustrated after the woman continued to refuse his advances. On Monday evening, he allegedly confronted the victim and attacked her with a sharp weapon. The assault caused severe injuries, and she died at the scene.
Residents in the area expressed shock and fear following the brutal killing. Police officers arrived shortly after the incident and launched an investigation into the murder.
Police Launch Search Operation.
After carrying out the attack, the suspect fled the area immediately. Police teams have now started an intensive search operation to locate and arrest him.
Authorities transferred the victim’s body to the hospital for post-mortem examinations. Investigators continue to collect evidence and record statements from witnesses and family members as part of the ongoing inquiry.
