Heavy rain and thunderstorm warning issued across several regions in Sri Lanka.

The Department of Meteorology predicts rain and thundershowers in several parts of the country today (31 May 2026). The department released this weather forecast in its latest statement issued this morning.

According to the forecast, the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, along with the Galle and Matara districts, may experience heavy rainfall exceeding 50 millimetres in some areas. Authorities expect unstable weather conditions to continue throughout the day as moisture levels remain high across the island.

Rain and Thunderstorms Likely in Many Districts.

The Department of Meteorology states that the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North Western provinces may receive intermittent showers or thundershowers during the day. Residents in the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya districts may also experience similar weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the Uva Province and the Ampara and Batticaloa districts could receive showers or thundershowers after 1.00 p.m. Weather officials urge the public to stay alert, especially during afternoon and evening hours when thunderstorms usually intensify.

Authorities Issue Safety Warning to the Public.

The Department of Meteorology advises the public to take precautionary measures during thunderstorms. Officials warn that strong temporary winds and lightning strikes may cause accidents and property damage in vulnerable areas.

Authorities encourage residents to avoid open spaces during lightning activity and remain cautious while travelling in heavy rain. They also request the public to follow weather updates and emergency instructions issued by relevant agencies throughout the day.
