Former Minister Harin Fernando says that former President and United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has personally taken responsibility for conducting political discussions with the camp led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.
Speaking to the media in Colombo on June 12, Fernando explained that the party assigned separate committees to handle technical discussions and coordinate future engagements with opposition alliance partners. He noted that these groups would focus on practical arrangements and collaborative political activities while Wickremesinghe would oversee direct political negotiations.
Fernando emphasized that the UNP leadership considers cooperation with Premadasa’s camp and other opposition forces an important part of its future political strategy.

Fernando also revealed details from a high-level party meeting held last Thursday. During the discussion, Wickremesinghe outlined plans for the party’s future activities, organizational reforms, and preparations for the UNP’s 80th anniversary celebrations.
Party leaders paid special attention to strategies for strengthening political cooperation with opposition groups and expanding the party’s influence across the country. According to Fernando, Wickremesinghe instructed party members to accelerate grassroots reorganization efforts, appoint new electorate organizers, and revive youth organizations nationwide through specially appointed committees.

Fernando further stated that Wickremesinghe appeared energetic and healthy following his recent heart surgery. Recalling a light-hearted moment during the meeting, he said the UNP leader joked that not only his heart but also his backbone had become stronger.
Fernando added that Wickremesinghe seemed “ten years younger” after the operation and said the party currently sees no need to discuss a new leadership structure.
