Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe expressed confidence that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will secure another term in office in 2029. Drawing a comparison to Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga, the minister said the President’s political journey remains focused, accurate, and firmly on target.
He described the current administration as a government that has earned the trust of the people and secured a strong public mandate. Samarasinghe also noted that some political groups continue to anticipate the government’s downfall, but he insisted that the administration remains stable and committed to delivering results.
Government Focuses on Economic Stability Amid Global Challenges.
Samarasinghe acknowledged that global economic pressures and tensions in the Middle East have created challenges for energy supplies and increased international shipping costs. Despite these difficulties, he said the government continues to manage the economy effectively and maintain stability.
The minister stated that the government aims to maintain Sri Lanka’s foreign exchange reserves at USD 7 billion. He also highlighted ongoing financial support from the World Bank, which continues to assist the country’s economic recovery efforts.
Opposition Urged to Unite Before Seeking Power.
The minister argued that fluctuations in the dollar’s value alone do not bring down governments. Instead, he said the administration continues to implement policies that strengthen the economy and protect national interests.
Samarasinghe also challenged opposition politicians who aspire to become president in the future. He urged them to build unity within their own ranks before pursuing leadership ambitions. Looking ahead, he said the government plans to increase dollar inflows by expanding the tourism sector and encouraging higher levels of foreign remittances, further supporting Sri Lanka’s economic growth and financial stability.
