Sri Lanka Police announced a new procedure for holders of personal protection firearm licences while renewing licences for the year 2026. Authorities instructed all licence holders to present their firearms at the nearest police station six months after receiving the renewed licence and obtain an official verification certificate.
Police stated that officers will inspect the firearm’s functionality and confirm whether the firearm number matches the number mentioned in the licence. After completing the inspection, the police station will issue a certificate confirming the verification process.
Police Department Issues New Instructions.
The Police Department said the National Security Council directed authorities to implement the new verification process for all personal protection firearm licence holders. Officials expect the measure to strengthen firearm monitoring and ensure proper documentation of licensed weapons across the country.
The Inspector General of Police informed all senior officers and Officers-in-Charge of police stations to take the necessary steps to conduct these inspections and issue certificates every six months.
Licence Holders Must Visit Nearby Police Stations.
Police further instructed all firearm licence holders who renewed their licences for 2026 to visit the nearest police station once six months pass after the renewal date. Licence holders must submit the firearm for inspection and receive the verification certificate confirming that the firearm operates properly and matches the licence details.
Authorities plan to continue the inspection process every six months in the future as part of a nationwide firearm regulation programme.
